1.   Generic Name or Active Ingredient:

      Salicylic acid 16.7% and lactic acid 16.7%

 

2.   Uses:

To treat and remove warts.

 

3.   How This Medicine Works:

Salicylic acid and lactic acid loosen the skin cells that are infected with the wart virus to allow removal of warts.

 

4.   Do Not Use This Medicine:

·              If you are allergic to salicylic acid, lactic acid or any other ingredient in its formulation.

·              To treat warts on the face or genital area

·              On children aged less than 2 years

 

5.  Before You Start To Use This Medicine:

  • Inform your pharmacist or doctor if you are allergic to any other drugs.
  • Inform your pharmacist or doctor if you have poor circulation, for example diabetes or peripheral vascular disease, or any other health problems.
  • Inform your pharmacist or doctor if you are or plan to get pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
  • Consult your doctor before using this medicine on children aged 2-12 years.

 

6.    Using With Other Medication:

  • Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medication, vitamins, herbal preparations, or supplements, as they may interfere with this medicine.

 

7.    How To Use This Medicine:

Follow the directions on your medication label carefully, and ask your pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. (National Call Centre)

a)    How to apply

               i.    Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before and after using this medication.

              ii.    Soak the wart in hot water for at least five minutes.

            iii.    Use an emery board or pumice stone to rub off the dead skin in the affected area (avoid sharing this board/ stone with others).

               iv.    Dry the area thoroughly.

              v.    Use the applicator to apply 2 to 4 drops of the medication directly to the wart once a day. Note: Allow each drop to dry before the next is applied. DO NOT apply the medication to surrounding healthy skin.

              vi.    Cover the treated area with a plaster or adhesive tape.

 

b)   When to apply

Daily (every 24 hours), or as advised by your doctor or pharmacist.

 

c)    How long to apply

You need to apply the medication as instructed until the wart clears up, or for at least 12 weeks, whichever is sooner. If the wart persists after 12 weeks, consult your doctor.

 

d)   If you forget to apply it

Apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then to apply the medicine. Do not double the dose.

 

8.   While Using This Medicine:

 

a)    Things you should do:

  • Tell your doctor, dentist or pharmacist that you are using salicylic acid and lactic acid.
  • Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medication at the same time
  • Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you develop any allergic reactions.
  • Seek medical advice if your symptoms persist.

 

b)   Things you must NOT do:

  • DO NOT apply the medication near your eyes, nose, mouth or injured skin areas.
  • Do not use over large skin areas for a long period (more than 12 weeks).
  • Do not share your medication with anyone, as warts can be contagious through skin contact.
  • Do not change the dose without checking with your doctor or pharmacist, and do not exceed the maximum daily dose.

 

In case of overdose, seek immediate medical attention.

 

9.   Side Effects:

All medicines may have some unwanted side effects. Sometimes they are serious, but most of the time they are not. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any side effects which are severe or persistant.

 

      Possible side effects:

  • Stinging, burning, or irritation of the skin
  • Itching

 

Prolonged use over a large skin area may cause salicylate toxicity. Seek medical attention immediately if you have these symptoms:

  • Ringing sound in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Diarrhoea
