What is a drug (medicine)?
A drug is a chemical substance which is used to prevent, control or treat diseases.
Medicines are classified as:
- Over-The-Counter Medicines
These are medicines that you can buy without a prescription from pharmacies or shops.
Examples: Vitamins, fever medicine (such as paracetamol)
Controlled Medicines with prescriptions
These must be obtained from doctors or pharmacists.
Examples: Medicines for hypertension and diabetes.
Controlled Medicines without prescriptions
These must be obtained from pharmacists.
Examples: Creams, cough and cold medicines.
