1. Generic Name or Active Ingredient:

    Promethazine
 
2. Uses:

For treatment of allergies, allergic reactions, and motion sickness, nausea and vomiting.

 

3. How This Medicine Works:

   It works by blocking the action of a certain natural substance in the body.

 

4. Do Not Take This Medication If:

·         You are allergic to promethazine

·         You are having certain breathing problem, suchs as asthma symptoms

·         Children less than 2 years old

5. Before You Start To Take This Medicine:

  • Inform your pharmacist or doctor if you are allergic to other medications.
  • Inform your pharmacist or doctor if you have heart disease, liver disease, seizures, narrow-angle glaucoma, prostate problems, a stomach ulcer, or trouble urinating, breathing problems such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, or sleep apnea, a blockage in your digestive system, or if you have ever had neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS).
  • Inform your pharmacist or doctor if you are or plan to get pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
  • Consult a doctor before using this medicine in children.
 
6. Taking With Other Medication:

    Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medication,   vitamins, herbal preparations or supplements as they may interfere with this      medicine.

 
7. How To Take This Medicine:

Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. (National Call Centre)

 
 

a)    How to take

Take this medicine with food or milk

b)   When to take

As directed by doctor/pharmacist

 
 

c)    How long to take

Should not usually be taken for more than 10 days in a row. If your symptoms persist, see your pharmacist or doctor for advice.

 

d)   If you forget to take it

Take it as soon as you as remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then to take the medicine. Do not double the dose.
 

8. While Taking This Medicine:

a)    Things you should do:

·         This medicine may make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Use a sunscreen when you are outdoors.

 

b)   Things you must NOT do:

·         Drink alcohol while you are using this medicine

 

In case of overdose, seek immediate medical attention

 
9. Side Effects:

All medicines may have some unwanted side effects. Sometimes they are serious, but most of the time they are not. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any side effects which are severe or persist.

 
Possible side effect are:
 
  • Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing.
  • Dark-colored urine or pale stools.
  • Extreme feelings of energy or excitement.
  • Fever, sweating, confusion, uneven heartbeat, muscle stiffness.
  • Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, pain in your upper stomach.
  • Problems with balance, walking, or speech.
  • Seeing or hearing things that are not really there (especially in children).
  • Seizures.
  • Drowsiness, or muscle weakness.
  • Shallow breathing.
  • Twitching or muscle movements you cannot control (often in your eyes, jaw, neck or upper body).
  • Yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes.
 
8. Storage and disposal:
  • Store at room temperature and in a dry place
  • Keep away from direct sunlight
  • Keep out of reach of children
  • Do not use after the expiry date has passed
  • Return any unused or expired medication to the nearest pharmacy.
